Safety
Reflectors on children’s clothing
For older and smaller children alike: reflectors offer pedestrians the best possible protection when the days are short, as they are seen much sooner by motorists. The GS mark provides security upon purchase. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Packing satchels
The key rule for primary school children is only to pack their satchels with what they actually need. The experts at TÜV Rheinland recommend that together with its contents, the satchel should not weigh more than ten percent of the child's body weight. In addition, the shoulder straps need to be adjusted correctly, as otherwise the child may experience pain or even back problems. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Safety is no child’s play
Playground equipment that has been damaged due to the weather or vandalism or which has been incorrectly designed or assembled poses a major source of danger for small children: According to TÜV Rheinland, eight out of ten playgrounds in Germany fail to meet safety requirements. The experts therefore provide advice to playground constructors and maintenance authorities, test the playgrounds themselves, and ensure that the staff of maintenance authorities receives training to become skilled playground testers. Skaters: leisure time fun rather than an accident risk
A helmet is just as essential as knee, elbow and wrist protection: anyone wishing to use inline skating as a way of keeping fit should not forego a complete set of protective equipment. Safety already plays a major role at the purchasing stage: according to TÜV Rheinland, the GS mark for tested safety offers some orientation. In addition, the shoes should comply with the European standard DIN EN 13843. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Teddy bears
There's no let-up for teddy bears and other members of this species. The experts from TÜV Rheinland Product Safety in Cologne as well as specialists at 24 laboratories in China and at LGA QualiTest in Nuremberg put toys and other products to the acid test. The professionals in Nuremberg alone test over 4,000 toys each year at Europe’s largest institute for the testing of toys. As well as the flammability of teddy and friends, all mechanical and chemical requirements for safe toys undergo meticulous examination. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Chair lift checks
A safe starting signal for the skiing season: the first snow has already drawn large numbers of winter sports fans earlier than usual into Germany’s low mountain range. But before the conditions for skiing and sledging were declared good, the safety experts from TÜV Rheinland were also needed at Winterberg in the Sauerland, as all the lifts are subjected each year to a detailed examination by independent specialists and test engineers to ensure that they are equipped to cope with the continuous stress of the winter season. Over two days the TÜV Rheinland experts put five chair lifts through their paces at Winterberg alone. Among other things, they carried out a careful inspection of all safety installations, the suspension rope, the shoring and the drive mechanism. Photo: TÜV Rheinland

Load testing of ladders
Falls are the main causes of accidents in the home. Household ladders in particular carry a significant risk of injury in the event of a fall. The experts at TÜV Rheinland in Cologne test and certify the load capacity, stability, non-slip properties and suitability for use of ladders. Ladders are loaded up to 260 kg, in order to ensure that treads and steps do not break. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Durability testing of leisure appliances
In order to ensure that air beds do not already lose air on their first trip to the swimming pool or beach, TÜV Rheinland experts put airbeds through their paces – in terms of quality and safety. The stitching is loaded with weights in order to test its tear strength. However, the experts at TÜV Rheinland advise that air beds should never be used as swimming aids, in deep water or without supervision. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
