Routine check
Two minutes that could save lives! That is how long the motorcycle safety check takes, which should become second nature to every biker. Because: many defects that cause serious accidents can often scarcely be noticed while driving. Therefore: Check the function of essential components before every drive.
Brakes
Failure of the brake system is one of the most common technical causes of accidents. It gets particularly dangerous when the brakes do not engage correctly. So before the beginning of each ride, activate the hand and foot brakes as forcefully as though you were performing an emergency stop. Here, a solid counter-pressure must be felt.
Check the fill level and condition of the brake fluid (gauge glass on the handlebars). If the fluid is cloudy and black, it must be changed immediately.
Lines and connections to brake cylinders or callipers for any leaks or material damage.
The electrical system
Check headlight, taillight, brake light, and blinkers and horn.
The function of the electrical immobilizer can be easily determined: extend the kickstand and pull the clutch with the engine running. The ignition on machines with the appropriate device must be interrupted, in order to prevent driving with the kickstand extended.
Gasoline and oil
Lack of gasoline or oil as the cause of an accident? This can really lead to dangerous situations in traffic such as when passing. Because full power is needed here. But if the engine suddenly starts to sputter, the biker finds himself in oncoming traffic.
A lack of oil in the engine can cause dreaded "piston seizing". The result: The rear wheel blocks, the motorcycle becomes uncontrollable and jumps to the side.
Chain
The drive chain must always have sufficient lubricant. Rusted chains belong in the trash! Important: the correct tension (listed in the operating instructions). The chain is often over-tightened. This puts extreme stress on the transmission bearings, destroys them in time, and can also lead to blocking of the rear wheel. But, if the chain has too much play, it begins to "wobble" or blocks on the transmission housing. Rule of thumb: You should be able to move the chain two finger widths up and down.
