Research Programme for Building and Housing

We have been commissioned under the ‘fona’ sustainability initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to manage its research programme ‘Building and Housing in the 21st Century’. This programme will run until mid-2008. Funding is no longer available for new projects.

Funding is provided for pilot projects, technical innovations and information gathering within the following fields of research:

  • Sustainable urban and rural housing
  • Research and technology for housing construction
  • Construction research and technology for infrastructures.

There are 21 scenarios, approaches and participatory processes, all of which arose from the Stadt 2030 ideas competition and research association (wound up in 2005). These represent future challenges for the urban and rural environment. The central issue is what opportunities and consequences will arise in the future from the accelerated change in conditions with respect to:

  • Devolution
  • Integration
  • Identity
  • Local democracy.

The following table provides a quantitative overview of our project responsibilities for the research programme ‘Building and Housing in the 21st Century’.

  • Term of the programme: 10/1999 – 12/2008
  • Number of research associations: 61
  • Number of individual initiatives (excluding associations): 10
  • Number of mandates: 3
  • Total number of projects:  251
  • Total finance available (fund volume own contribution): Approx. 77 million euro
