Protectors: safety first!

Protectors are currently the only components of motorcycle clothing, for which there is a recognized testing basis in Europe (EN 1621-1). The protective shields consist either of hard shells with foam inserts, expanded formed parts, net mats, or multi-layer systems. When purchasing these, bikers should also look for the CE and GS symbols in addition to the European standard.

This is how protectors protect:

  • They must be large enough to cover the respective part of the body – for example, much larger than the kneecap for the knee.
  • They must be attached securely enough so that they do not loosen during a fall, twist, or fall out of their pockets.
  • They must be "mounted" in the correct location – particularly with retrofits (pay attention to the markings and instructions for use of the manufacturer).

The hips and spine are particularly neuralgic points during a fall. However, appropriate protectors offer protection. With "back protectors" take care to ensure that they cover the entire spine and have a "crumple zone" on the side facing the body. External protectors may not be too thick, they have to fit underneath the clothing. Movable "scales" ensure that the biker is not constrained. Simple handling is another important criteria.
