Packing satchels

The key rule for primary school children is only to pack their satchels with what they actually need. The experts at TÜV Rheinland recommend that together with its contents, the satchel should not weigh more than ten percent of the child's body weight. In addition, the shoulder straps need to be adjusted correctly, as otherwise the child may experience pain or even back problems. Photo: TÜV Rheinland

Teddy bears

There's no let-up for teddy bears and other members of this species. The professionals in Nuremberg alone test over 4,000 toys each year at Europe’s largest institute for the testing of toys. As well as the flammability of teddy and friends, all mechanical and chemical requirements for safe toys undergo meticulous examination. Photo: TÜV Rheinland

Skaters: leisure time fun rather than an accident risk

A helmet is just as essential as knee, elbow and wrist protection: anyone wishing to use inline skating as a way of keeping fit should not forego a complete set of protective equipment. Safety already plays a major role at the purchasing stage: according to TÜV Rheinland, the GS mark for tested safety offers some orientation. In addition, the shoes should comply with the European standard DIN EN 13843. Photo: TÜV Rheinland

The experts therefore provide advice to playground constructors and maintenance authorities, test the playgrounds themselves, and ensure that the staff of maintenance authorities receives training to become skilled playground testers. Product tests worldwide

The TÜV Rheinland experts check products for safety and quality across the globe. The company operates large product testing laboratories in China, Japan, Germany and Hungary. Endurance tests

Products also have to successfully pass a constant load test in the TÜV Rheinland test laboratories. For example, suitcases are transported a distance of 15 kilometres on a jolt-ramming machine for around three and a half hours in order to check whether the wheels can withstand high loads on a day by day basis.
