Material tests

Material tests

Leather, plastics and textiles are all materials that are used to perform a wide variety of tasks in our everyday lives. They are used in shoes, coated protective clothing, furniture fabrics, floor coverings, foils etc. How well these materials are actually processed or even suitable for their respective application contexts is something that can be tested.

One criterion applied when testing the quality of leather shoes, for instance, is that concerning water vapour permeation resistance. This test determines whether a pleasantly dry "climate" prevails in such shoes despite the unavoidable, natural phenomenon of perspiration.

In its function as an accredited testing laboratory, TÜV Rheinland Product Safety GmbH carries out tests on materials in order to establish their compliance with relevant national and international standards. The variety of tests that TÜV performs is as wide as the types of materials available and their application contexts. Chemical tests are used, for instance, to determine whether the material concerned complies with statutory contamination limits. Physical tests are carried out to verify a product's functionality and to ascertain whether the material used actually can withstand the loads it will be subjected to in its service life. The practical tests performed reflect everyday household practice, as in the case of textiles that are checked for their colour fastness when washed.
All the material tests TÜV Rheinland Product Safety GmbH carries out have safety and quality aspects as their key focus.
