Machine/ mechanical systems certifier

Name: Thomas Langen
Function: Machine / mechanical systems certifier
Company: TÜV Rheinland Product Safety GmbH
Location: Cologne

My duties

I recently joined TÜV Rheinland in the General Mechanical Systems Business Unit, and I test the product groups of tools, ladders, household appliances, child care, sports equipment, general mechanical appliances and industrial trucks.

The tests are based on current standards and internal testing guidelines (if products are not covered by standards) or customer specifications. For example, the ladders testing standard is DIN EN 131 (currently consisting of 4 parts), and it defines the requirements that ladders have to satisfy.

These requirements are listed in a test certificate which is stored in our test certificate database. When I'm testing a ladder (e.g. for a GS inspection or as the basis for GS certification), the relevant requirements (e.g. the functional dimensions, warpage, strength, rung load bearing capacity etc.) are checked, entered on the test certificate and compared with the guidelines. The ladder passes the test if all guidelines are complied with.

If a product doesn't comply with all guidelines, it isn't possible to issue a certificate and a non-conformity report is written in addition to the test report (the completed test certificate). It provides the customer with detailed information about the non-conformities.

The customer has the opportunity to make improvements to the product and have it tested again (if desired). The tests are implemented at the request of the customer, e.g. if it wants to have a GS ("safety tested") certificate issued.

We also perform tests for retailers who want to make sure that the products they order from suppliers satisfy the relevant requirements and are in conformity with statutory provisions (e.g. Appliance and Product Safety Law).

Why I decided to work for the TÜV Rheinland Group

My job is interesting and challenging. TÜV Rheinland also has a good reputation and it's one of my top three choices of employer.

How is my career at the TÜV Rheinland Group progressing?

I'm still in the induction/ training phase in some areas of my work, and I can't say anything conclusive about the progress of my career after being with TÜV for such as short time. I get effective support from my superiors and colleagues, and they're helping me to learn the ropes. The basic seminars that my employer provides are also helpful. TÜV Rheinland is very committed to further training (and it also promotes it), so we have the opportunity to attend all kinds of relevant seminars.
