From power plant technology and pressure vessel and elevator testing through to bridge inspection and cable car testing.
A safe starting signal for the skiing season: the first snow has already drawn large numbers of winter sports fans earlier than usual into Germany’s low mountain range. But before the conditions for skiing and sledging were declared good, the safety experts from TÜV Rheinland were also needed at Winterberg in the Sauerland, as all the lifts are subjected each year to a detailed examination by independent specialists and test engineers to ensure that they are equipped to cope with the continuous stress of the winter season. Over two days the TÜV Rheinland experts put five chair lifts through their paces at Winterberg alone. Among other things, they carried out a careful inspection of all safety installations, the suspension rope, the shoring and the drive mechanism. Photo: TÜV Rheinland

As global market leader in this dynamic growth market, the experts at TÜV Rheinland have helped to develop testing standards that are applicable across the world. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Mobile testing of road conditions: the experts from TÜV Rheinland LGA test the road surface using a special vehicle equipped with extremely accurate laser sensors. These detect all grooves and cracks to the nearest millimetre. In addition, a special scanner provides high-resolution pictures of every detail of the road surface, while the surroundings are recorded by a front camera system. As a result, the on-board computers supply extremely detailed information about the road surface. The purpose of the tests is to enable highway agencies to deploy the financial means for maintenance measures according to plan. Photo: TÜV Rheinland LGA
Photovoltaics have a future: by testing solar modules, TÜV Rheinland is making its contribution to the ongoing development of solar technology. The most modern solar simulator in Europe, housed in Cologne, is the proof of this. The artificial sunlight means that, for the first time, extensive photovoltaic modules that convert sunlight into electricity can be tested in the laboratory. In addition, the modules are exposed to extreme cold and heat as well as numerous other burdens to perform well on a permanent basis. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
Whether it's an owner-occupied home or a high-rise office building, construction developers and contractors can make use of TÜV Rheinland's all-round competence in the field of structural engineering. As safety coordinators, TÜV Rheinland’s experts ensure construction quality, support the construction project as surveyors or certify building companies with the "TÜV am Bau" ("TÜV for Construction") label in accordance with high standards of quality. Experts from TÜV Rheinland and LGA use state-of-the-art measuring and analysis methods to test the structural safety of buildings such as bridges and halls. Shortcomings in the planning and execution of construction work, dampness and in many cases insufficient maintenance pose a greater long-term risk to the structural safety of halls than one-off events such as heavy snowfall. Inspection of furnicular railways Inspection by TÜV is mandatory for all owners of vehicles and motorcycles, and so it is for operators of furnicular railways, ski or other types of lifts: A long way up from the ground, TÜV Rheinland’s experts check the safety and reliability of furnicular railways at regular intervals. Classified as installations subject to inspection, furnicular railways must meet particularly high standards. Operators rely on TÜV Rheinland as an approved inspection body to help them fulfil all the relevant legal requirements. Photo: TÜV Rheinland
