Detection of Dangerous Substances in Buildings
Dangerous substances found in buildings today encompass substances introduced in the past and the use of which is prohibited today, as well as substances which are still brought into buildings through construction material, furniture or cleaning agents. The so-called prior contaminations include for example as-bestos, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) (e.g. in permanently elastic joints), or pentachloro-phenol (PCP) in wood preservatives containing PCP. Substances which are still introduced into buildings today include for example formaldehyde in pressboard products, orga-nic solvents in varnishes and colors or terpenes, e.g. as odorous substances in cleaning and polishing agents. TÜV Rheinland Group helps in the private as well as the business sector with the detection and assessment of hazardous substances in buildings, and makes recommendations for improving the situation, if necessary.
