Consumer tips - Toys for babies
A toy for children under the age of three has to meet particularly high safety requirements. Before making a purchase, check for any obvious defects. Wooden building blocks must the free from splinters and the colour should not come off. Take care that small parts, such as glass eyes, noses and heads are anchored securely. Braids can also be dangerous. Nails, sharp corners and edges are taboo. Holes should be large enough that children's fingers do not get stuck.
Not everything is harmless
Be careful with rubber balls or teething rings that are filled with liquids. These may contain preservatives or irritants that are not permitted or are incompatible. Care is also called for if the toy has a noticeable smell. This can result in damage to health through solvents. All materials must be flame resistant and textiles free from carcinogenic substances.
0-3
A toy that can be dangerous to small children must be marked: "Not suitable for children under the age of three" or carry a warning on the label "0-3". The name and address of the manufacturer or importer should also appear on the product or packaging.
