Consumer tips - Floor coverings

Whether laminate, parquet, PVC or carpet – the deciding factor is that the covering is hard-wearing enough for its purpose, is sufficiently adherent and is able to withstand impacts such as chair castors. A good carpet or plastic surface should also not contain any harmful substances and therefore be odourless – in contrast to cheap flooring.

Consider intended use

It is generally recommended that the floor covering be selected according to its use. Carpets in the home office or children's bedrooms must withstand particular impact. They should be hard-wearing and also low in dust and harmful materials. Children will pick up large quantities of dust, particularly when they are at the crawling stage.

Durability

Laminate is considered to be particularly hard-wearing and yet easy to care for. However, they should also be resistant to scratches and abrasion, and pay particular attention to the impact sound insulation, as footsteps on laminate can often be heard one floor below. NB: Whoever lays laminate or PVC himself should use environmentally friendly adhesive low in solvents, or dispense with adhesives altogether, as with using click laminate.
