Consumer tips - Bikes
Spring forks and sprung-mounted saddle supports protect the small of the back. Oval, ergonomically shaped grips on the handlebars prevent your hands from going to sleep on long bike rides. Comfortable gel saddles also ensure a more comfortable ride. Disk brakes also prove themselves, particularly in wet conditions but economic cable brakes like V-brake or cantilever provide sufficient deceleration. You are best familiarising yourself with the brakes by taking them for a test ride.
Handlebar and front end
The sticking point in terms of stability remains the steering unit. The combination of the steel front end/aluminium handlebar is not to be recommended, as these can become deformed with too rigid an assembly of the handlebars. If you are unsure of the material, a check with a magnet will help when making a purchase. Steel attracts; aluminium does not.
Lighting
Lighting that works well is important for survival. Each road bike has to have a dynamo, front and rear light and reflectors. The law will only permit battery operated lights as additional lighting and only then if they display their rated capacity. The exception is sports bikes under eleven kilograms in weight. Flashlights, on the other hand, are forbidden by law.
