Accident damage, what to do now?

Information about the accident damage

Accident – what to do? First of all, you should...

  • Secure the accident site: switch on warning lights, set up reflective triangles.
  • If possible, provide first aid or call an ambulance.
    Uniform emergency call: 110
    New German states: 115
    Fire dept.: 112
  • Do not leave the scene of the accident for any reason.
  • Find witnesses to the accident.
  • Photograph the scene of the accident or make an accident sketch.

Important! If you cause an accident when alone (e.g. damaging a parked car at night), it is not sufficient to leave your information (e.g. your business card)! You are guilty of leaving the scene of an accident!

If you cannot find anyone (as a participant/witness), immediately find/call the nearest police department.

You should have the following in your accident kit:

  • Writing material (notepad and pen)
  • Chalk (oil-based; even blackboard chalk)
  • Tape measure
  • Camera (simple design). Note: change the film and batteries 1 x per year!

Write down the following information regarding the other party in the accident:

  • Name/address/telephone number (is the driver also the registered user of the car? Otherwise, write down both addresses)
  • Type of car/license plate
  • Car insurance/insurance card number
  • Damage to the car of the other party in the accident

Write down the following information regarding the accident itself:

  • Accident location
  • Date/time
  • Accident sketch
  • Policeman/station

Note: Check the police record. Definitely have your opposing personal opinion recorded in writing. Do not admit guilt.

Write down the following information to give to the other party in the accident:

  • Name/address/telephone number
  • Type of car/license plate
  • Car insurance/insurance card number
  • Damage to your own car

Central office of the car insurers
If one of the parties in an accident does not list his insurance, the central office can find out the insurance with the information of license plate, day of the accident, type of vehicle, and possibly even address. If desired, the insurance will then be informed of the accident by the central office.

If necessary, the central office also informs the workshops and roadside assistance.
