ISO 14001
ISO 14001 standard was prepared by the ISO 207 Technical Committee, and it includes the requirements of an environmental management system. This standard has been reviewed and its new edition ISO 14001:2004 replaces the 1996 one.
According to ISO 14001, the first step in the implementation of an environmental management system is to conduct an initial environmental review, including:
· Identification of the companys environmental aspects
· Identification of legal requirements
Based on the information surveyed, the company prepares improvement goals and operational procedures to control environmental aspects and manage legal requirements. The system is complemented with procedures on structure, liability, internal audit and training.
Certification is usually conducted in two stages including pre-audit and certification audit. Management systems integrated between ISO 14001 and other management systems standards can be implemented and certified, such as ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001.
Advantages
Some of the advantages the certification of this Standard entails are:
· Immediate environmental cost reduction
· Systematization of environmental protection
· Image improvement and competitive edge
· Correct preparation and adaptation of requirements and legislations
· Customer and employee satisfaction
· Greater trust from stockholders and investors
